College Of Inter-Faculty Individual Studies In Mathematics and Natural Sciences The Inter-Faculty Individual Studies in Mathematics and Natural Sciences (MISMaP) were created in the academic year 1992/93 as a new form of studies, the first of its kind in Poland. The studies begun its operation on the basis of a motion to form MISMaP, a document adopted by the Senate of the University of Warsaw on December 18, 1991. In 2001 MISMaP College was founded and the Regulation of the College was adopted (Resolution No 74 of the Senate of the University of Warsaw, dated November 14, 2001). Seven faculties of the University of Warsaw are involved in MISMaP College: the Faculty of Biology, Faculty of Chemistry, Faculty of Physics, Faculty of Geography and Regional Studies, Faculty of Geology, Faculty of Mathematics, Informatics and Applied Mathematics and the Faculty of Psychology. There are 12 paths of study to choose within the College: - biology, biotechnology, environmental protection – directed by the Faculty of Biology
- chemistry – directed by the Faculty of Chemistry
- physics, astronomy – directed by the Faculty of Physics
- geography, spatial economy – directed by the Faculty of Geography and Regional Studies
- geology – directed by the Faculty of Geology
- mathematics, informatics – directed by the Faculty of Mathematics, Informatics and Applied Mathematics
- psychology – directed by the Faculty of Psychology
MISMaP College is recruiting for the first year of full-time day studies in the academic year 2007/2008. Starting from the academic year 2007/08 studies at MISMaP College will be conducted in the system of uniform 5-year MSc studies and studies of the first and second cycle, depending on the path of study chosen by the MISMaP student for his or her diploma. Candidates qualified for studies in psychology will be accepted for their first year of uniform 5 year MSc studies. Candidates qualified for other paths of study will be accepted for their first year of first cycle studies. The number of available places is limited to 110. Each student on commencing studies at MISMaP is put under the care of a professor or reader representing the field of study closest to the student’s interest. Students, together with their tutors, determine their own individual curricula consisting primarily of the courses taught at the faculties that form part of MISMaP College, as well as additional courses taught at other University faculties. The individual curriculum of a MISMaP student should contain courses taught at a minimum of two paths of study available at the faculties participating in MISMaP College. Students are not obliged to choose courses from all the faculties participating in MISMaP. Individual studies are both more interesting and more difficult than traditional studies. They allow students to educate themselves in a wider scope than one field of academic interest. They allow contact with outstanding scholars from the very start of the studies. However, they require students to be active and responsible and to be able to organise their work. Such studies can suit both those who struggle to choose what to study, as well as those who have very well defined interests. The ideal candidate to study at MISMaP College is a person of wide interests in mathematics and natural sciences. If a person has decided to study physics or biology, they can start their studies at the selected faculty directly, where they will also be able to choose what courses to follow. MISMaP College operates within the system of ECTS – European Credit Transfer System. Each course is assigned a number of credits. To complete each year of study a total number of 60 credits is required. Each student must collect at least 180 credits within the course of the first cycle studies, and a minimum of 120 credits for their second cycle studies. Moreover, in order to complete the studies (and obtain the “absolutorium”) it is necessary to meet curriculum requirements for MISMaP College students sufficient to obtain the bachelors or masters degree in the path of study chosen by the student. After MISMaP College students have obtained the absolutorium, submitted their diploma paper (bachelors or masters thesis) and passed their diploma examination (bachelors or masters) at the appropriate faculty, they are awarded a bachelors or masters diploma of the faculty indicating that they conducted their studies within the MISMaP system. MISMaP College graduates may be awarded baccalaureate or masters titles within one or more fields of study offered at the faculties participating in MISMaP College. There are 577 students in total studying at MISMaP College in the academic year 2006/07, including 20 who are currently preparing their second diploma within MISMaP. In 2005/06 44 MISMaP College students were granted Ministry of Education scholarships for their achievements in science, and 80 students received Rector of the University of Warsaw scholarships for their good results in their studies. MISMaP students take part in the European Union SOCRATES-ERASMUS programme, which enables them to take some of their courses at foreign universities. They also take part in the MOST programme, which is designed to allow students to study for one semester at another Polish university. MISMaP College graduates often continue their studies in PhD programmes at the University of Warsaw or other European or American universities. Having received their masters or doctoral titles, they take up research positions at institutions in Europe or elsewhere in the world, or start working for commercial companies, where their inter-disciplinary education received at MISMaP and their ability to actively approach challenges and effectively organise their work help them pursue a successful working career. Because of the wide range of interests, MISMaP College graduates work in: - scientific units (research institutes, Polish Academy of Sciences (PAN) institutes, research and development units)
- consulting
- insurance
- banking
- healthcare/hospitals
- medical and pharmaceutical firms
- biotechnology firms
- IT
- education (schools, universities)
- mass media (press, radio, television)
